President of Latvia presents credentials to the first resident Ambassador of Latvia to Australia, Marģers Krams

On 6 September 2021, in an official ceremony in Riga Castle, the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, presented credentials to the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the Commonwealth of Australia, Marģers Krams.

Marģers Krams began his diplomatic career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2002 when he was posted as Head of Mission at the Permanent Representation of Latvia to the World Trade Organisation in Geneva. From 2007 to 2011, Marģers Krams was Ambassador of Latvia to Canada. From 2011 to 2012, he served as Ambassador-at-Large at the European Union Directorate and, from 2012 to 2015, as Foreign Affairs Advisor to the President of Latvia. From 2015 to 2017, Marģers Krams headed the Bilateral Relations Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was followed by the posting as Ambassador of Latvia to the Kingdom of Sweden in 2017.

The Ambassador has been decorated with the Order of the Three Stars, Third Class, as well as receiving awards from Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Poland.

Marģers Krams has graduated from the Latvia University of Agriculture; he then continued his education at various courses provided by the University of Latvia and the Advisory Centre on WTO Law.

Latvia and Australia are connected by good bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and a similar understanding and perspective of international political processes. The two countries are also closely bound by a considerable and active Latvian diaspora. Australia recognised Latvia’s independence in 1921, when Latvia joined the League of Nations. In 2021, Latvia and Australia mark the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.
