On the eve of Lāčplēsis Day, participating in the Veterans Day ceremony in Canberra and honoring the fallen soldiers, the Latvian Ambassador to Australia Marģers Krams laid a memorial wreath at the Australian War Memorial.

The Ambassador paid tribute to 21 Chevaliers of the Lāčplēsis War Order who died in Australia with a moment of silence in memory of the soldiers who have fallen in the War of Independence.

"We are aware of our history and we respect our heroes. And we are still guarding our freedom today," said the Ambassador.

In Australia and other Allies, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States, November 11 became known as Armistice Day, a day to commemorate the victims of the First World War. After World War II, the Australian Government agreed with the United Kingdom's proposal to rename Armistice Day to Veterans Day to commemorate the victims of both world wars.

In Australia, victims of war are honored with a minute's silence every year, at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month.
