The Foreign Ministers of Latvia and Azerbaijan discuss bilateral and multilateral cooperation

On 12 December 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, who is in Latvia on an official visit.

Their meeting discussion covered topics of current bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Azerbaijan, including cooperation in international organisations, the relations between the EU and Azerbaijan, cooperation in the Eastern Partnership format, and security situation in the South Caucasus region and Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Foreign Ministers expressed interest in a continuing active political dialogue between Latvia and Azerbaijan and cooperation in the Eastern Partnership; they also underlined the need for developing business cooperation and contacts between line ministries and parliaments.

The Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan thanked Latvia for its support for the territorial integrity and unity of Azerbaijan. He praised the successful bilateral cooperation and Latvia’s contribution to the implementation of institutional reforms in Azerbaijan.

The Latvian Foreign Minister underlined that the upward trend in economic cooperation between the two countries should be fostered through expanding business activities in the information technology sector, education and culture. 

As part of his visit, the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister also meets with the President of Latvia, the Speaker of the Saeima (Latvian Parliament), and the Minister of Defence, as well as presenting a gift for the People’s Bookshelf at the National Library of Latvia.
