13.01.2016. 13:51

The Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia are pleased to announce the annual Latvian and Estonian language promotion Joint Award (Languages Award) contest. In accordance with the Award’s regulations, nominations for this Languages Award can be for a translation, a piece of research, for a Latvian language teacher in Estonia or for an Estonian language teacher in Latvia that have contributed to the promotion of Latvian and Estonian in 2015.

The aim of the Languages Award is to contribute to the Latvian-Estonian dialogue and bilateral co-operation through facilitating study and knowledge of Latvian and Estonian, by encouraging the Latvian-Estonian and Estonian-Latvian translators in translating fiction, political, popular science, historical, sociological and other genres and for promoting the work of young translators, as well as stimulating Latvian and Estonian language researchers and language teachers in the promotion of the Latvian language in Estonia and the Estonian language in Latvia.

The Joint Award of the Foreign Ministries was once known as the “Joint Latvian – Estonian and Estonian – Latvian   Translator’s Award” (Translator’s Award), but, on 3 July 2015, during a visit to Tallinn, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevičs together with Estonian Foreign Minister Keit Pentus- Rosimannus agreed on an update of the Joint Translators Award which enlarges the scope of nominees so as to include language researchers and teachers. This change is reflected in the 3 July 2015 Joint Communiqué. Foreign Minister Rinkevičs said he is convinced that this development in the Joint Award’s history will expand the opportunities for promotion of Latvian and Estonian languages and literature in both countries.

The Joint Translators Award by the Foreign Ministries of Latvia and Estonia was granted to Maima Grīnberga for the best translation in 2009 and 2012, to Guntars Godiņš – in 2010 and 2013, to Kalev Kalkun in 2011, and  to Margus Konnula (Contra) in 2014.

The monetary value of the Award is 3,000 euros and the Award Fund receives equal contributions from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia. The Jury of the Translator’s Award consists of representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia as well as experts on literature and languages. The Jury’s decision on a winner will be taken in the spring of 2016.
