On 13 April, Ambassador of Latvia to NATO Māris Riekstiņš and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Admiral James Stavridis had their introductory meeting.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the current matters: NATO operations in Libya and Afghanistan, the NATO Command Structure review and military co-operation of the Allied states with Latvia and other Baltic states.

The ambassador stressed, in particular, the effectiveness of the NATO-implemented Baltic airspace patrolling operation during the time when, under the impact of the global financial crisis, the Allies seek by various means to join efforts and develop military capabilities for carrying out NATO’s tasks.

Ambassador Riekstiņš also expressed satisfaction concerning the co-operation between the structures under Adm. Stavridis command and the National Armed Forces of Latvia both in the NATO operations in Afghanistan and during regional military exercise.
