The Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia announce the annual contest for the best Latvian-Estonian and Estonian-Latvian translation in 2014.

The aim of the Translator’s Award is to enhance bilateral cooperation between both countries through facilitating activities and fostering professional skills of Latvian-Estonian and Estonian-Latvian translators in translating fiction, political, popular science, historical, sociological and other texts, as well as promoting the work of young translators.

The competition is being held for the sixth consecutive year. When presenting the Translators' Award last year, the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs,  noted that "over time, the award has become a beautiful tradition. It has promoted interest in, and increased knowledge of both countries about each other. Translations produced by the nominees also have a major significance for the promotion of literature and academic research of both countries".

The monetary value of the award is 3000 Euros and the Estonian and Latvian Ministries of Foreign Affairs will contribute equally to it. The panel will include representatives of both foreign ministries as well as literary experts. The winner of the competition will be decided in the spring of 2015.

Applications with the nominees' CVs can be submitted to the Foreign Ministry by post (Address: Valdemāra iela 3, Rīga LV-1395) or in an electronic form (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)  by 9 February 2015.  Access the regulations of the competition and the application form HERE.

In previous years, the awards have been presented to translators Maima Grīnberga (2009, 2011), Guntars Godinš (2010, 2013) and Estonian translator Kalev Kalkun (2012).

The translators' prize is an initiative by the Ambassador of Latvia to Estonia, Kārlis Eihenbaums, and the Ambassador of Estonia to Latvia, Jaak Jõerüüt, who wrote a joint letter to the Foreign Ministers of both countries in 2008. The agreement to establish the Estonian-Latvian and Latvian-Estonian translators' award was signed by Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Urmas Paet, and Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Māris Riekstiņš, on 18 February 2009.
