Horizontal priorities for Latvia

Stability and enhancement of the Economic and Monetary Union, including

  • Banking Union
  • Economic policy coordination
  • social dimension of the EMU  

During the Greek Presidency, work must be continued on the current issues of EMU enhancement. We believe that the strengthening of mechanisms will considerably improve the European Union’s ability to identify risks and threats to EMU functioning as well as preventing crises.

Latvia considers that it is essential to ensure continuity in the work on a number of substantial proposals under the Europe 2002 Strategy that stimulate economic growth and employment. An effective European Semester is of vital importance.

Latvia's priorities at the Foreign Affairs Council

Central Asia and Afghanistan

We are interested in a continued dialogue between the EU and Central Asian states, facilitating Central Asian regional cooperation as well as enhancing security and stability. 

EU Eastern Partnership

Latvia continues to support the process of bringing the Eastern Partnership states closer to the EU in political and economic terms.

The United States of America

To maintain a close EU-U.S. cooperation in addressing global issues.  

The Russian Federation

We want to achieve a balanced progress in all topics on the EU-Russia agenda.

Common trade policy

Latvia supports the promotion of trade relations with third countries.
