Press statement on the Second Report of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia on the Implementation of the Strategy of the Republic of Latvia for Integration into the European Union

On 7 May 2001 the Second Report on Implementation of the Strategy of the Republic of Latvia for Integration into the European Union was examined by the European Integration Council (EIC). The EIC supported the Report and delegated the Minister of Foreign Affairs to submit it to the Saeima, Parliament of Latvia, and acquaint the Parliament with the implementation of the Strategy. On the same day the Report was also discussed by the European Affairs Committee of the Saeima that supported it in a parliamentary meeting.

On 17 May 2001 the Minister of Foreign Affairs will report on the implementation of the Strategy in the Parliament.

The Strategy of the Republic of Latvia for Integration into the European Union was adopted on 9 February 2000, at the same time opening the accession negotiations with the European Union. It was important to size up the benefits Latvia would acquire by joining the EU. The Strategy lays emphasis on the national interests of Latvia.

Report on the Implementation of the Strategy is elaborated not only for the government, but also for the entire society of Latvia. In a way it is a "Progress Report" of the government to the people of Latvia. The Strategy and regular Reports provide significant contribution to raising public awareness on the EU issues and developing a dialogue with the society as anyone has free access to the above-mentioned documents.
