The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the resolution adopted on 27 March by the United Nations General Assembly on the territorial integrity of Ukraine. The Foreign Ministry, in particular, commends the fact that the resolution was adopted by a vote of 100 in favour to 11 against, with 58 abstentions, which clearly demonstrates condemnation by the international community of Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
The resolution refers to the UN Charter and a number of international documents which guarantee Ukraine's sovereignty and security within the current internationally recognised borders. The resolution underscored that the referendum of 16 March in Sevastopol, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, was held without authorisation by Ukraine, has not, and cannot be recognised as grounds for recognizing any alteration of the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.
Therefore, all the States, international organizations and specialized agencies are called not to recognize any change in the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol on the grounds of the said referendum, and to refrain from actions that might be interpreted as such.
The resolution also confirms commitments as regards preserving the sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders. The Assembly called on States to refrain from actions aimed at disrupting Ukraine’s national unity and territorial integrity, including by modifying its borders through the threat or use of force, or any illegitimate means. All parties were urged immediately to pursue a peaceful resolution of the situation through direct political dialogue. The resolution pledges support for the efforts of international organisations to assist Ukraine in protecting the rights of all its residents, including national minorities.
It is significant that the result of voting confirms an unequivocal support from UN member states representing regions all over the world. This is a clear signal from the international community that the development in Ukraine is the issue of preserving the current international order, and this concerns all UN member states.
