On 27 May in the afternoon, a news report was received on four OSCE Special Monitoring Mission experts being detained in the separatist-controlled territory in the Donetsk region. We are concerned about the security of international civilian experts and turning against an international mission whose mandate includes mediation and monitoring the situation.  We call for an immediate release of the detained experts thus demonstrating the desire to reduce tension and protect the interests of the entire Ukrainian nation. We also call on the parties to the conflict to make every effort towards stabilizing the situation in Eastern Ukraine. We consider that the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission can provide support in seeking compromise.

The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine currently comprises over 200 observers from 41 countries. Latvia participates in the mission with five civilian experts. Besides, the Cabinet of Ministers made a decision on 20 May to contribute EUR 20 000 to the mission.
