On July 8th, Viktors Makarovs, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated in a high-level conference in Brussels. The meeting brought together international organisations including the Council of Europe, the OSCE, UNDP, and OECD along with various financial institutions, representatives of the European Union and Ukraine. Besides EU states, donor countries including the United States of America, Canada, Japan, Norway, Switzerland were represented. Viktors Makarovs voiced Latvia’s support for Ukraine’s modernization and reforms at the conference. He said that Latvia is prepared to share its experience with the democratic and socio-economic reform process. The Parliamentary Secretary provided information on the recently-launched training programme offered by Latvia to representatives of public administration and civil society of countries in Europe’s eastern neighbourhood. This training programme gives participants an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the EU, and pertinent economic, political and legal issues.
The high-level meeting confirmed the international support for political and economic stability in the Ukraine, and its ongoing reform process. The meeting was opened by Štefan Füle, the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Eastern Neighbourhood Policy. Conference participants recognized the importance of the Association Agreement signed between the EU and the Ukraine in June 2014. The Agreement is a good basis for further political association and economic integration of the Ukraine with the EU. Volodymyr Groysman, Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Communal Services, informed participants about Ukraine’s priorities.
Donors discussed a roadmap toward a Donors' and Investors' Conference which could take place this autumn.
