On 1 September, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Aiga Liepina, presented her credentials to the Acting Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio.

During the meeting, Acting Secretary General emphasised that the Council of Europe, in particular in the field of various human rights standards, is one of the most advanced international organisations; however, its visibility in the international arena should be increased. The Ambassador, in her turn, noted that Latvia greatly appreciated the role of the Council of Europe in the field of elaborating conventions and in supervising their implementation.

Mrs de Boer-Buquicchio encouraged Latvia as a European Union Member State to promote actual co-operation between the two organisations and to participate actively in the development of co-operation mechanisms.

In conclusion of the meeting, the prospects were discussed for the Council of Europe Information Centre in Riga.
