Ambassador of Latvia to Japan visits Kanagawa Prefecture

On 3 September the Ambassador of Latvia to Japan, Peteris Vaivads will visit Kanagawa Prefecture which borders the capital Tokyo and is considered part of the Greater Tokyo Area. The capital of the prefecture is Japan's second largest city, Yokohama, with the largest harbour in the country and a number of important Japanese companies. Kawasaki is also among Japan's largest cities. The total number of the region's population exceeds nine million. For a long time, the prefecture has held a major position in Japan's economy, politics and culture.

The aim of the visit was to discuss possibilities for promoting economic co-operation between Latvia and Kanagawa prefecture. The visit takes place by the initiative of the Embassy of Latvia in Japan, and meetings have been scheduled with Governor Shigefumi Matsuzawa and the Head of the Yokohama Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kenji Sasaki. The visitors also intend to see the Yokohama Port and to meet with the head of its administration, Masatoshi Kawaguchi, as well as with the management of the Industry Development Centre.

This will be the Ambassador's first meeting with Governor of the Prefecture and leading officials from the Prefecture administration. 

For a brief period of time in 1938 Yokohama hosted the Honorary Consulate of Latvia with Johanness Villems Bode as Honorary Consul.
