From 2 to 8 September, the Embassy of Latvia in China will represent Latvia in the First Asia-Europe (ASEM) Culture and Arts Festival organised by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Radio and Television Administration of China and the Municipality of Beijing. The festival will feature a number of various cultural events of the ASEM member countries: concerts, exhibitions of art objects, books, coins and postage stamps.
Due to support form the Bank of Latvia and Latvijas Pasts, the residents and guests of Beijing will be able to view a collection of Latvian bank notes, coins, anniversary coins and postage stamps displayed in the Hall of Culture and Art of the National Central Library.
The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), which was first launched in 1996, is a vital forum for a multilateral dialogue between Asia and Europe. The only institution of ASEM is ASEF (Asia-Europe Foundation), established in 1997 and operating as a non-profit organisation. ASEM brings together ten countries of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)[1], 27 European Union Member States, Japan, China, Mongolia, Pakistan and South Korea, as well as the European Commission and the ASEAN Secretariat. Latvia, following accession to the European Union, was accepted to ASEM in 2004 together with other new EU Member States.
