During the annual United Nations General Assembly in New York yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister Artis Pabriks met with the European Union (EU) foreign ministers and urged them to support the Baltic states' candidate for the next UN secretary general, Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga.
The minister pointed out that so far, Eastern European countries have never had a chance to run for the post, Vike-Freiberga could contribute greatly by sharing Eastern European countries' reforms experience, as the complicated reforms that were carried out in the region's countries have led them to a rapid development in the past fifteen years.
Pabriks stressed that UN needed to change to attain its goals.
