At the 61st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Latvian Foreign Minister, Artis Pabriks, met with the Argentine Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jorge Taiana, who assured him that the candidacy of the Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, as nominated by the Baltic states, for the position of the UN Secretary-General will be assessed in detail and without any prejudice.
Minister Pabriks noted that the decision of the Baltic states was determined by the fact that the President of Latvia is a formidable personality who may make a significant contribution to the further development of the United Nations Organization.
During the meeting, the Latvian Foreign Minister expressed Latvia's interest in advancing economic co-operation with Argentina, as the potential for bilateral co-operation has not yet been fully implemented, as well as in expanding the legal framework between both countries. Currently under the process of formalising approval is the agreement on co-operation in the combating of illicit trafficking and abuse of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and crimes related thereto. In the future agreements on co-operation in other areas need to be signed as well.
The Foreign Minister extended an invitation to the Argentine Foreign Minister to visit Latvia for an in-depth discussion on the prospects of bilateral co-operation.
On 26 August 1991, Argentina was the first of the Latin-American countries to recognise the independence of Latvia and express its readiness to establish diplomatic relations.
