Press release 27.04.2005

Additional information on security measures during visit of US President

1. Information has been received that certain persons are visiting various institutions and private companies in Rīga and claiming to be members of the police and security service.

Please, take into account and also inform the people that, when approaching a person, every representative of the State Police or other security services must in all cases announce who they are and present their badge.

If there is any doubt whether the person is really involved in security measures of the visit, or if you would like to check if the information provided by such a person is true, please, call the Security Police, phone number: 7208964, or the Security Service of the Saeima and the President, phone number: 9473027 or 7389060.

2. Lists are being prepared containing employees who will certainly have to work in the previously-mentioned security areas on May 6 and 7. This also refers to those working in the service sector, as well as personnel of emergency and rescue services. Please, call the Security Service of the Saeima and the President, phone number: 9473027 or 7389060, e-mail: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., and send an official letter indicating the name of the state institution/organisation/company, the address of its actual location, names, surnames and identity numbers of the employees.

3. We would like to remind you that people are still encouraged to declare their place of residence in the corresponding municipality. It is particularly important for the inhabitants of Rīga and Old Rīga, because the registers of inhabitants will be used as the main information source on the basis of which lists will be prepared and people will be allowed to enter the security areas.

  • In order to be allowed to enter Old Rīga and other security areas, when crossing the borders of these areas, persons (aged 14 and older) included in the lists will be asked to present proof of identity – an official document that has the person's photograph, name, surname and identity number.
  • Persons unable to present legal proof that they have the right to enter the restricted areas (do not own / rent a property there, have not declared their place of residence) will not be admitted.
  • Tourists and other persons living in hotels in these areas will have to have a statement from the particular hotel stating that the person lives there, as well as identity documents.

People are asked to show understanding and observe the security requirements. Detailed information on how the identity data will be checked and how many checkpoints will be in the security areas is confidential. It is possible that the borders of restricted areas may be changed – in such case information will be provided later.
