In November 2025, Denmark celebrated the 107th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia with a rich programme of events, gatherings, and a shared festive spirit.
The month of celebrations began on 3 November with a meeting at the Embassy of Latvia with the Denmark–Latvia Association (Foreningen Danmark–Letland). The association was established shortly after the restoration of Latvia’s independence and has historically united Danes who provided various forms of support to Latvia. Its members continue to visit Latvia regularly and closely follow developments in Latvia and in Latvian–Danish relations. The discussions were inspiring and raised many questions about current issues. The event was further enriched by musical performances from talented students of the Danish Rhythmic Music Conservatory – Marts Dreļs and Inga Vamze – who delighted the audience with jazz interpretations of Latvian music.
On 4 November, Minister of Culture Agnese Lāce visited the Embassy and met with members of the diaspora. The conversation highlighted in particular the accessibility of Latvian culture abroad and the important role the diaspora plays in its promotion.
On 11 November – Lāčplēsis Day – staff of the Embassy together with the members of diaspora and Danish friends laid flowers at the monument to Latvians who passed away in exile, located at Vestre Cemetery in Copenhagen.
On 12 November, the Danish premiere of the film "The Exalted" took place at "Cinemateket" in Copenhagen, in cooperation with the Danish Film Institute and the Representation of the European Commission. Director Juris Kursietis is already well-known in Denmark for his films "Modris" and "Oleg".
Both Latvian diaspora associations in Denmark also celebrated Latvia’s national day: on 15 November the Latvian Society in Copenhagen celebrated together with the choir “In Corde Meo” and the weekend school “Sauleszaķēns”, and on 22 November the Latvian–Danish Society in Bording, Jutland, where Ambassador Inga Skujiņa delivered a festive speech.
On 19 November, the Embassy hosted a reception in honour of Latvia’s Independence Day, attended by Danish partners, diplomats, friends of Latvia, and members of the diaspora. This year has been of particular importance for Latvian–Danish relations – cooperation in defence, economy and science has been further strengthened, and the State Visit of the Danish Royal Couple to Latvia stood as a highlight of this partnership.
The month of celebrations concluded on an uplifting note with a mass performance of "Saule, Pērkons, Daugava" at Copenhagen City Hall. The Ambassador took part in the closing event of Denmark’s EU Presidency cultural programme “Europe Sings Together”, where ambassadors presented songs of special national significance. Latvia was represented by Mārtiņš Brauns’ composition "Saule, Pērkons, Daugava".
During the event, the Ambassador introduced the audience to Latvia’s choral singing traditions and the historical importance of the song, and the evening concluded with a joint performance by all participants.
