Latvia and Denmark discuss the implementation of priorities and cooperation in the UN Security Council amid a challenging and rapidly changing geopolitical context
On 4 February 2026 in Copenhagen, the Director of the Department of International Organizations and Human Rights at the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Katrīna Kaktiņa‑Kalniņa, together with her Danish counterpart, Louise Riis Andersen, Coordinator for the UN Security Council at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussed the experiences and cooperation between Latvia and Denmark within the UN Security Council. The event brought together representatives of the diplomatic corps residing in Denmark, representatives of Danish state institutions and non-governmental organizations, staff of UN institutions based in Denmark, as well as other interested participants.
Both Denmark and Latvia are elected members of the UN Security Council this year. Denmark is a like‑minded and close ally of Latvia within the UN, NATO, the European Union, and the Baltic Sea region, and therefore the priorities of both countries in the UN Security Council are closely aligned. The discussion with participants focused on current challenges in the Security Council and on how both countries are working together in a complex geopolitical environment to implement their shared priorities in the Council’s work.
The presentation of Latvia’s priorities and the ensuing discussion were organized in cooperation with the Danish Foreign Policy Society, and the event was moderated by the Society’s Director, Charlotte Flindt Pedersen.
