Latvia’s restoration of independence marked in Copenhagen’s “Cisternerne” with a unique choir concert
On 4 May 2026, the Embassy of Latvia in Denmark hosted a special event dedicated to the anniversary of the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia, held in the unique exhibition space "Cisternerne".
The central highlight of the event was a concert by the Latvian diaspora choir in Copenhagen, “In Corde Meo.” Making use of the extraordinary acoustics and atmosphere of "Cisternerne", the choir performed a programme of Latvian choral music designed as a symbolic allusion to the Latvian nation’s path to freedom – from the darkness of occupation underground to the light of restored independence.
“This event is a story about the strength of our unity. We aim to convey a contemporary and visually compelling message especially to the younger generation,” emphasised Latvia’s Ambassador to Denmark, Inga Skujiņa. “It is essential to recognise that freedom is not self‑evident – it was won through collective effort, and even today the active engagement and support of the diaspora in national defence initiatives remain a cornerstone of our independence.”
The project was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia through the diaspora support programme.
