From 26 to 29 May 2026, one of the most significant international scientific conferences on ocean and climate protection - the Ocean Connectivity Conference - took place in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands.

Researcher Inta Dimante‑Deimantoviča from the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment (BIOR) presented a study on plastic pollution in Arctic waters.

Her participation in the conference was supported by Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Latvia in Denmark.

The conference was held under Denmark’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council and was integrated into UArctic Congress 2026, a major scientific event dedicated to Arctic regions that brings together leading researchers, Indigenous organizations, and policymakers from around the world.

Presenting Latvian research on the international stage marks an important step toward achieving Latvia’s foreign policy and security objectives. The Arctic is currently experiencing some of the fastest climate changes on the planet, and Latvia’s involvement in these processes highlights the country as a globally responsible partner.

This engagement also aligns with Latvia’s priorities at the UN Security Council, where particular emphasis is placed on the impact of climate change on peace and security.

Organized in line with the goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the conference provided a platform for scientists worldwide to combine research findings with local knowledge. The participation of BIOR and other Latvian researchers opens broader opportunities for Latvia’s further integration into Arctic research and international collaborative projects.
