UN Human Rights Council 47th Session – Interactive Dialogue on the annual report of the High Commissioner - Statement by H.E. Ambassador Bahtijors Hasans

22.06.2021. 13:39

Thank you, Madam President.

Latvia aligns with the statement delivered on behalf of the European Union.

My delegation joins previous speakers in thanking you, Madame High Commissioner, for presenting your annual report to the Council.

When considering how to recover better we must not forget those who throughout the pandemic have been at the forefront of promoting and protecting human rights worldwide, and often have been the first to sound alarm bells of human rights violations. In this regard, we are deeply worried by the continued attempts of some States to restrict activities of civil society actors and to limit their right to freedom of expression, of peaceful assembly and of association.

Latvia is a staunch supporter of free, independent, responsible and pluralistic media. Unfortunately, many States continue to restrict and censor the media, and persecute, arrest, detain, torture and even kill journalists and media workers. All States must do their utmost to prevent violence, threats and attacks against journalists and to ensure accountability for crimes committed.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate my country’s unwavering support to the mandate and independence of your Office.

I thank you!
