UN Human Rights Council 60th Session – Item 2 General Debate - Statement by H.E. Ambassador Ivars Pundurs

10.09.2025. 14:20

Geneva, 10 September 2025

Mr. President,

Let me start by reaffirming Latvia’s commitment to international human rights and humanitarian law. We firmly support the strengthening of the UN human rights system.

We praise the dedicated work of UN human rights experts, who remain at the forefront of the response to crises and challenges.

We are deeply concerned by the magnitude and severity of human rights and fundamental freedoms violations. Gender oppression, the erosion of civic space, violations committed on national security and counter-terrorism grounds, and the weaponization of food are pressing issues that demand our attention. While the situations in Afghanistan, Sudan, the Middle East, Russia, Georgia, and other regions are challenging, even dire, they are not irreversible - another future is attainable.

Intentional attacks against civilians and non-military targets constitute war crimes. The recent brutal attacks by Russia on Ukrainian cities, resulting in the loss of innocent lives, once again demonstrate a calculated campaign of terror and destruction. We strongly condemn such actions and urge Russia to cease this war of aggression.

Latvia reaffirms its unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

International law is not optional; it is a fundamental obligation. Latvia will continue to uphold the fundamental principles of international law at the Human Rights Council and during its upcoming term on the UN Security Council.

I thank you!
