UN Human Rights Council 61st Session – Item 10 General Debate – Report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on Cooperation with Georgia – Statement by the Republic of Latvia

27.03.2026. 14:29

Geneva, 27 March 2026

Mr. President,

Latvia aligns itself with the EU statement.

We thank the High Commissioner for the update on cooperation with Georgia and commend the OHCHR’s ongoing efforts to promote human rights in Georgia.

Latvia remains deeply concerned about the ongoing democratic backsliding and deteriorating human rights situation in Georgia.

We reiterate our call on the Georgian government to engage in a meaningful and inclusive dialogue with the people of Georgia, to immediately release unjustly detained politicians, journalists and activists, to reverse repressive legislation and to protect country’s independence, future and the fundamental rights and freedoms of its people.

Latvia reaffirms its strong and unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

We are profoundly concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian and human rights situation in the occupied breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. We call on the de facto authorities in these regions to ensure protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without discrimination.

I thank you.
