Geneva, 16 June 2026
Mr. President,
Latvia aligns itself with the EU statement. We thank the High Commissioner for the Annual Report and reiterate our unwavering support for the work of his Office.
In this era of unprecedented conflicts, uncertainty, and pressure on the rules-based system, the mandate of the Human Rights Council has never been more crucial.
Globally, from the Middle East to Russia, Belarus, and beyond, a regressive international agenda persists. Women’s rights are being reversed, online spaces are poisoned by disinformation, journalists and activists are imprisoned, and NGOs are shut down. Human rights are being deliberately and carelessly undermined.
We stand united with Ukraine against Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression. Ukraine will overcome this challenge, and Ukraine will thrive. So will the democratic world.
As we celebrate the Council’s 20th anniversary, we must defend a multilateral human rights system rooted in the UN Charter and international human rights law. Latvia’s candidacy for a seat on the Council for 2029-2031 shows our commitment to the Council’s work and its dedication to promoting and protecting human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
I thank you!
