On 27 September 2022, in an official ceremony in Dublin, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia, Juris Štālmeistars, presented his letter of credence to the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins.
The Ambassador extended greetings from the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, to the President of Ireland, and he affirmed that the priorities of his tenure would be various topics of bilateral cooperation, so that Latvia and Ireland could become even closer partners and allies. Besides bilateral political, economic, cultural and diaspora matters, special attention must be devoted to the restoration of peace and security in Europe through supporting Ukraine in its fight against the aggressor, Russia.
President Higgins noted that Ireland and Latvia had much in common, including their historical experience of being part of large empires. It is essential to continue working together to address contemporary challenges, including climate change. A particular emphasis was placed on the need to preserve the Latvian and Irish languages in a changing world.
In his post, Ambassador Juris Štālmeistars succeeds Jānis Sīlis, who was serving as Ambassador to Ireland since 2017.
