Ambassador Kārlis Eihenbaums submits copies of credentials letters to China's Foreign Ministry

On 16 August 2024 Latvian Ambassador Kārlis Eihenbaums met with Director General of the Protocol Department Hong Lei (洪磊) and Director of the Bureau of Diplomatic missions Lu Qi (禄祺) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China and presented copies of his credential letters.

Ambassador Eihenbaums and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China expressed their readiness to promote further development of bilateral relations between Latvia and China in a spirit of peace, prosperity of peoples and mutual understanding, including by maintaining regular diplomatic dialogue, as well as by supporting deepening economic and cultural ties. Ambassador Eihenbaums acknowledged the China’s position when Latvia was still struggling for its freedom and independence, thanked China for the rapid recognition of the Republic of Latvia and the opening of the PRC’s Embassy in Riga in the early 1990’s. Ambassador Eihenbaums noted China's particularly responsible role in its status as a Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council, which is particularly important in today's turbulent geopolitical climate, when a war of aggression has been launched. The Latvian Ambassador also stressed necessity to improve the global and regional security situation so that international law, the principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity are strictly respected.

Ambassador Eihenbaums has worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia since January 1993. He was director of the Western Europe Department and later became director of the Americas Department. During his career as a diplomat, he has performed the duties of Director of the First Bilateral Relations Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was Press Secretary-Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as Head of the Latvian delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. He also served as Foreign Adviser to President Guntis Ulmanis. Ambassador Eihenbaums has acquired rich experience working in Latvian diplomatic and consular missions abroad. He was the First Secretary and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Latvia in London, Counsellor and Chargé d’Affaires a.i., at the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in The Kingdom of the Netherlands, the first Permanent Representative of Latvia to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in the Hague, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the Republic of Estonia, to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the State of Israel and Canada.

Ambassador Eihenbaums has graduated from the Faculty of History and Philosophy at the University of Latvia, as well as attended Aarhus University in Denmark.
