Ambassador Kārlis Eihenbaums meets with Vice Foreign Minister Deng Li
On 17 October, Latvian Ambassador Kārlis Eihenbaums met with Vice Foreign Minister of China Mr. Deng Li to discuss the current affairs of international and Latvia-China relations.
The interlocutors stressed the sustainability of diplomatic relations between the both countries over 33 years period and marked the exchange of recent visits including this July’s visit to Latvia by Chinese government's Special Representative for Europe, Ambassador Wu Hongbo.
Ambassador Eihenbaums called on China to support Latvia's candidacy in the 2025 elections for the UN Security Council's non-permanent seat in order to jointly work in 2026-2027 towards successful implementation of the UN Charter.
Discussing the tense geopolitical situation in the world, the Latvian Ambassador pointed out that in the 21st century, when colonial wars should be in the past, unfortunately Russia, in essence, continues to pursue policies contrary to international norms, grossly violating them by launching military aggression against the sovereign UN Member state Ukraine.
The discussion also touched upon the situation in a wider region and conflicts elsewhere in the world that impose additional responsibilities on those who advocate for peace and international law.
Ambassador Eihenbaums called for the continuation of diplomatic dialogue between Latvian and Chinese foreign ministries and for the development of mutually beneficial bilateral economic co-operation also planning a meeting of the Joint Economic Committee. The Ambassador expressed his commitment to promote the availability of quality Latvian products in China.
In conclusion, Ambassador Eihenbaums presented a token of friendship to the Vice Foreign Minister - a book “My China Story” by Pēteris Pildegovičs, an acknowledged Latvian sinologist and the first diplomatic representative of our country to China after 1991.
