Consultations on UN matters between foreign services of Latvia and China concluded in Beijing
On 12 and 13 March, 2025, diplomatic consultations were held with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in Beijing on issues of the UN agenda, including Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. The delegation of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was led by Ambassador-at-Large - Director of the UN Security Council Task Force at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Mr. Andrejs Pildegovičs, who met with Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Hua Chunying and Director-General of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Shen Bo.
Ambassador Pildegovičs introduced the representatives of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the priorities of Latvia's candidacy for the UN Security Council - peace and resilience. Officials of both countries discussed cooperation among the members of the UN Security Council, as well as its practical aspects and current developments. The importance of Latvia-China bilateral relations and the European Union-China dialogue in the year when we celebrate the 50th anniversary of European Union-China relations was discussed.
Mr. Pildegovičs specifically drew the attention of Chinese officials to the need to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine as soon as possible, which would be based on the principles of the UN Charter, respect of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ukraine and the European Union should participate in the possible peace negotiation process in order to achieve the implementation of these goals.
Latvia is running for the 2025 elections to the UN Security Council (period of 2026-2027) for the first time. The UNSC membership would be one of the most important instruments for the implementation and protection of Latvia’s foreign policy interests, as well as allowing Latvia to further expand its international cooperation, thereby contributing to world peace and stability
During his visit to China, Ambassador Andrejs Pildegovičs also met with the Head of the European Union Delegation to China, Ambassador Jorge Toledo, the UN Resident Coordinator in China, Ambassador Siddharth Chatterjee, as well as with the heads and leading researchers of China's leading think tanks, the Centre for China and Globalization and the Institute of European Studies of the China Academy of Social Sciences, to exchange views on regional and international security issues. Ambassador Andrejs Pildegovičs also met with the Ambassador of Estonia, Hannes Hanso, and visited the Latvian Embassy in Beijing.
