On 14 March 2025, the Latvian Embassy in Beijing hosted an event for foreign ambassadors, Chinese and foreign diplomats, representatives from international organizations, Chinese cultural and media specialists as well as the Latvian diaspora to present the priorities of Latvia’s candidacy for membership of the UN Security Council and to show the animated film, The Flow.

In his address to the participants, the Latvian Ambassador Kārlis Eihenbaums emphasized an important foreign policy goal set by Latvia – candidacy for an elected member’s seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC). The Ambassador informed the audience about Latvia’s UNSC priorities under the motto of Together for Peace and Resilience. Those present had the opportunity to get acquainted with informative material about Latvia’s UNSC candidacy.  The event included the screening of the animated film The Flow directed by the Latvian filmmaker Gintis Zilbalodis. Kārlis Eihenbaums highlighted cooperation, one of the crosscutting themes of The Flow, emphasising the importance of working together, when in the name of common goals, one must strive to reach agreement and overcome differences of interest.

The Flow has gained acclaim worldwide and received the highest-ranking awards at several major film festivals, including in China. This past 28 February, the film began its journey to meet its audiences in China. In his interviews with Chinese media, Ambassador Kārlis Eihenbaums has expressed confidence that Chinese audiences will certainly appreciate the film’s unique qualities and that it has the potential to open up new opportunities for Latvian-Chinese cooperation.

After watching the film, the participants asked questions to its special effects designer Mārtiņš Upītis via an online video.

In Beijing, the film was screened at the Lumière Pavilions cinema in cooperation with the film’s distributor in China, the Beijing Blue Media Times Cultural Development Co. Ltd. media company.

The Embassy event was implemented as part of the public diplomacy programme in support of the lobby campaign of Latvia’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council. The campaign aims at ensuring successful election of Latvia to the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term in the 2025 election, at which Latvia is running for an elected member’s seat for the first time. Membership of the UNSC will be a key instrument in pursuit and protection of Latvia’s foreign policy interests, as well as enabling Latvia to expand the scale of its international cooperation thereby contributing to world peace and resilience.
