A working meeting with foreign ambassadors held in Beijing on Latvia’s priorities for the UN Security Council in 2026–2027

On 22 October 2025 in Beijing, the Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to China, Kārlis Eihenbaums, hosted a meeting with ambassadors from Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Central America. The event focused on Latvia being elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and on Latvia’s priorities for its work in 2026 and 2027.

Ambassador Eihenbaums highlighted Latvia’s commitment to active participation in the UN Security Council, protecting international law and the UN Charter, support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, addressing cybersecurity and hybrid threats, and reducing disinformation. The need to prevent sexual violence in armed conflicts and ensure accountability for victims was also emphasized.

The Latvian Ambassador called for dialogue and practical cooperation in the UN, where Latvia will work side by side with other members of the Security Council. Ambassador Eihenbaums expressed confidence that good cooperation will also take place here in Beijing, especially taking into account China’s status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the UN membership experience of the countries represented at the meeting, in particular, of them serving on the Security Council.
