To register a child as a citizen of Latvia

30.12.2025. 16:06

A child born abroad can be recognized as a Latvian citizen if one or both parents are Latvian citizens at the time of the child’s birth. If the parents have the status of Latvian non‑citizen, but the child was born after January 1, 2020 and does not hold any other citizenship, the child may also be registered as a Latvian citizen.

To register a child as a Latvian citizen, a parent must send all required documents to the Latvian Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs. The list of necessary documents is available on the Office’s website: https://www.pmlp.gov.lv/en/child-born-abroad-if-one-or-both-parents-are-latvian-citizens-time-birth-child

If the child’s birth certificate is issued in English, German, French, or Russian and is sent by mail from abroad, it does not need to be translated into Latvian.

The decision on granting citizenship is made by the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs in Latvia, which then sends a notification to the parents at the address provided abroad.

After citizenship is granted, please contact the Consular Section by phone at +48 22 616 40 14 or by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
