Latvian Tradition Dances into the Heart of Seoul

On 22 September 2025, Seoul — the foot of the iconic Seoul N Tower transformed into a celebration of Latvian culture as Zelta Sietiņš, Latvia’s largest youth folk dance ensemble, brought vibrant rhythms, storytelling, and centuries-old traditions in a captivating flashmob performance.
Dressed in traditional Latvian folk costumes, 26 young performers—high school students aged 16 to 19—performed folk dances that reflected the richness and diversity of Latvia’s cultural heritage. Each dance told a story, whether of human relationships, harmony with nature, or the rhythms of rural life.
Founded in 1958, Zelta Sietiņš has represented Latvia at major international folklore festivals in more than 30 countries across five continents. The Seoul performance served as a preview of their upcoming participation in the Cheonan World Dance Festival, held in Cheonan City from 24–28 September, where they will officially represent Latvia.
Traditional dance remains a vital and living part of Latvia’s cultural identity, passed down through generations. Through events like this, the ensemble also shared a taste of the Latvian Song and Dance Celebration, inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Held every five years, this national festival brings together thousands in celebration of folk music and dance. This year, Latvia hosted the Youth Song and Dance Festival, while the next nationwide Song and Dance Celebration is scheduled for 2027 in Riga, capital city of Latvia.
The performance at the Seoul N Tower was organized by the Embassy of Latvia in Korea as part of ongoing efforts to promote cultural exchange between Latvia and Republic of Korea.
