Screening of the documentary "The Balance Sheet of Siberia"
On Monday, 2nd of October 2023 Embassy of Latvia in cooperation with Irish Emigration Museum (EPIC) within the Dublin Festival of History invites you to the screening of the documentary The Balance Sheet of Siberia.
The film reveals human stories and personal tragedies of Soviet deportations, that were carried out after Latvia was occupied by Soviet Union in 1940. Tens of thousands of people from Latvia, including thousands of children were deported to different Siberian gulags – forced labour camps, where most of them died.
In the documentary the film director Dzintra Geka-Vaska, who has dedicated more than 30 years researching Latvian stories in Siberia, together with the relatives of the deported people, travel to the distant Siberian gulags of the Far North of Russia. During the trip they commemorate their beloved relatives who died far away from their homeland and meet descendent of the Latvian survivors.
