Celebration on the occasion of the 2004 EU enlargement
On 1 May 2024, 20 years have passed since the largest enlargement of the European Union, when Latvia, together with nine other countries, joint the family of 15 member states of the European Union. On the occasion of this festive event, the Irish government hosted a reception also known as the Day of Welcomes in the Farmleigh estate where the opening speeches were given by Taoiseach Simon Harris, Tánaiste Michael Martin and other Irish politicians. Ambassadors of the EU and candidate countries of 2004 enlargement as well as representatives of their diaspora were invited to attend the event. The Latvian delegation was represented at the event by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to Ireland Juris Štālmeistars, Lecturer, Erasmus School Academic Co-ordinator at TU Dublin School of Art & Design Aija Freimane and writer Sandra Bondarevska.
