Political consultations between Latvia and Turkey reflect a positive dynamic in bilateral relations

On 2 December 2020, political consultations in a video-conference format were held between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Turkey. At the consultations, Latvia was represented by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, and Turkey – by the Director for EU Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister Faruk Kaymakcı.

The officials expressed their appreciation for the positive dynamic in bilateral relations and spoke of their willingness to continue the political dialogue between Latvia and Turkey, including through exchanges of high-level visits and work to intensify business and trade. They discussed cooperation in international organisations and several other areas of common interest, including defence, culture and education. The diplomats expressed interest in teacher exchange under the Erasmus+ programme, as well as tourism development, in so far as the conditions of the pandemic allow for it.

The relations between the European Union and Turkey and developments in the eastern Mediterranean were also discussed during the consultations. Andris Pelšs underlined the need for continued efforts to reduce tension in the region, which is essential for a positive course in relations between the EU and Turkey. The Turkish side confirmed their interest in reducing tension. Deputy Foreign Minister Faruk Kaymakcı underlined that EU membership is a strategic goal for Turkey.

The diplomats also shared their views on cooperation between the two countries in NATO and on current global agenda, including developments in Nagorno-Karabakh and relations with neighbours to the EU and Turkey.
