Regional visit to Naujoji Akmenė

On 19 August 2024, Ambassador Solveiga Silkalna and her Deputy Santa Krūze visited Naujoji Akmenė on a regional visit.

During the regional visit, a meeting was held with the mayor of the Akmene region municipality Vitalijus Mitrofanovas and his deputies Inga Vismantienė and Tomas Martinaitis.  Representatives of the Embassy and municipality discussed strengthening of cooperation between Latvia and Lithuania, including opportunities for the development of cross-border public transport, attraction of tourists, as well as attraction of employees in border area companies.

The representatives of the municipality kindly invited the residents of Latvia to visit the new sports center in Naujoji Akmenė, where a swimming pool and saunas are available for family recreation. The mayor of the municipality V. Mitrofanovas informed on construction of wind parks developed in the Akmene region as well as the construction of several more wind generators in the nearest future. At the beginning of this year, "Latvenergo" company in Lithuania "Elektrum Lietuva" announced that it will build its first wind farm in Lithuania, in the Akmene region, with a capacity of up to 15 MW, investing around 30 million euros. It is planned that the production of electricity in the park will be started in the second half of 2025.

Ambassador and her deputy also visited the Free Economic Zone of the Akmene region, as well as factory AB "VMG Woog Solutions". The mayor of the municipality and his deputies also showed the premises of Naujoji Akmenė Culture Center, where not only public events, including concerts, but also private events are held.

Naujoji Akmenė celebrated its 75th anniversary on 24 August, the mayor of Dobele also visited the town. In 2025, Akmene region will celebrate 75 years.
