
President Rinkēvičs and Minister for Climate and Energy Melnis mark Accession of Baltic States to European Energy System in Vilnius

On 9 February 2025, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia synchronised their power systems with the Continental European Synchronous Area (CESA) thus strengthening the energy resilience and independece of the Baltic region.
To mark this historic occasion, Presidents and responsible ministers of the Baltic States and Poland as well as European Commission representatives, including President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, paid visites to Vilnius on 9 February. Accession of the Baltic states to the European energy system, the protection of critical infrastructure, the strengthening of transatlantic relations, the development of the European defence industry, the implementation of key regional infrastructure projects, as well as support for Ukraine and sanctions policy towards Russia were among the topics President Edgars Rinkēvičs discussed with his counterparts. Minister for Climate and Energy Kaspars Melnis and his colleagues from Lithuania and Estonia, together with Poland, signed a joint statement on the protection of critical energy infrastructure assets. Minister stressed the importance of cooperation, which allows to successfully carry out energy security projects in the region, as well as need to make energy more accessible for the society and business.
