On Feb 28 Ambassador of Latvia to Kazakhstan Mr. Juris Maklakovs met with the Minister of Defence of Kazakhstan Mr. Adilbek Dzhaksybekov in the Ministry of Defence. During the meeting the Ambassador informed the Minister on the tasks of the NATO Contact Point Embassy in Kazakhstan, discussed security and development of Afghanistan, as well as pointed to the important role of Kazakhstan in the future of Afghanistan and the security and stability of the region in whole. The Minister acknowledged Kazakhstan’s interest in cooperation with NATO within the Partnership for Peace framework, as well as in developing bilateral co-operation with Latvia. Transit of non-military cargo to and from Afghanistan, as well as the potential for using the routes for commercial purposes in the future, was also discussed.
