10.01.2024. 10:48

The service is available to persons who reside abroad permanently and have indicated their place of residence abroad in the Register of Natural Persons of Latvia.

The child can be registered in Latvian citizenship, if one or both parents are Latvian citizens at the time of the child's birth.

Documents can be submitted:

1) In the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs of Latvia by post or by e-mail signed with a secure electronic signature. More information here

2) In the Embassy of Latvia in the Netherlands. To register your child as a citizen of Latvia and apply for the first identity document (passport and/or ID card) of the child, please book an appointment by using the ELECTRONIC APPOINTMENT SYSTEM.

At the appointment the following documents shall be presented:

  • Filled application form
  • Birth certificate on international form (can be requested at the local municipality where the birth of the child has been registered);
  • Personal identification documents (passport and/or ID card) of the parent(s).

After submitting all the necessary documentation, the personal identity code is granted to the child in approximately one month.

The issuance of a passport and/or ID card is possible only after the identity code has been granted to the child.

Please note that the whole procedure (receipt of personal identification code and passport and/or ID card) takes at least two months.

For any questions please contact the Embassy's Consular Section.
