On Tuesday, 20 May 2025, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Latvia to the United Nations, in collaboration with the UN Movie Society of the United Nations Staff Recreation Council, presented a special virtual global event featuring the 2025 Academy Award-winning animated feature film FLOW. The event was broadcasted live and available on demand via the United Nations’ official platforms – UN Web TV and UN YouTube.

As part of the UN Movie Society’s ongoing mission to advance the values of the United Nations through cinematic storytelling, the event featured an exclusive interview with FLOW’s producer, Matīss Kaža. The discussion explored the film’s deep resonance with UN values and its poignant reflection on today’s global challenges.

To mark this historic achievement—FLOW being the first Latvian film to receive an Oscar, the programme opened with remarks by H.E. Ms. Sanita Pavļuta-Deslandes, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Latvia to the United Nations.

FLOW is a dialogue-free animated narrative that follows a black cat, dog, capybara, lemur, and secretary bird as they navigate a devastated, post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a global flood. Despite their differences, these unlikely companions must cooperate to survive and adapt to an uncertain future. Through themes of loss, resilience, and coexistence, the film becomes a powerful allegory for solidarity in the face of adversity.

In parallel, the United Nations champions values of peace, inclusion, mutual respect, and understanding. FLOW’s message echoes the UN’s enduring commitment to diversity, cooperation, and the shared responsibility of building a sustainable and harmonious world.

Cinema, as a universal language, plays a vital role in advancing the core ideals enshrined in the UN Charter, ranging from the promotion of peace and development to the protection of human rights, cultural appreciation, and the dignity and equality of all people.
