Requesting a birth, marriage or death certificate

NB! As of 1 July 2019, the Consular Department of the Embassy does not authenticate documents with an Apostille. However, according to The Regulation on Public Documents (Regulation 2016/1191) of the European Parliament and the Council of 16.02.2019, the documents can be issued together with a multilingual standard form. Further information on this can be found here.

Before requesting a document with a multilingual standard form, please make sure that the authority to which the document must be submitted accepts documents with a multilingual standard form. If this is not the case, instead of requesting the document from the Embassy, it must be obtained directly from the competent authority in Latvia. The document can then be notarially certified by the Latvian Sworn Notary Council:

Birth, marriage and death certificates can be requested either electronically or directly from the Embassy.

Electronically:

To submit an electronic request for receiving a document via the Embassy, ​​please use the E-service "Acceptance of an electronic application for document request". Using this E-service, one can request the following documents:

  1. Their own birth certificate or the birth certificate of their minor child;
  2. Their own marriage certificate;
  3. The death certificate of a relative.

From the Embassy:

To request a birth, marriage or death certificate from the Embassy, ​​you must have informed the Population Register of Latvia about your residence in Austria, Liechtenstein, Slovakia or Switzerland. To receive the service at the Embassy, an appointment must be made in advance: please contact the Consular Department of the Embassy to arrange an appointment.

NB! Payments on site at the Embassy can only be made by card (VISA, VISA Electron, VPay, Maestro, MasterCard).


 

To request a birth certificate, the following documents must either be submitted in person or sent by post to the Consular Department of the Embassy:

  1. Application form (your address and phone number must also be indicated);
  2. Proof of payment of state and consular fees (copy of the bank statement);
  3. If you wish to receive the document together with a multilingual standard form, an additional consular fee of 40.00 EUR will need to be paid;
  4. If you wish to receive the certificate by post within Austria, Liechtenstein, Slovakia, or Switzerland, a consular fee of 10.00 EUR will need to be paid.

The certificate will be issued in Latvian in 5 business days.

NB! A new marriage certificate cannot be issued for a divorced marriage. Instead, it is possible to request a marriage statement with an entry on divorce. Further information on this can be found here.
