Registration of a child as a citizen of Latvia – obtaining the personal identity code.

A child born abroad can be recognized as a Latvian citizen if one or both parents are Latvian citizens at the time of birth. If the parents have the status of Latvian non-citizen, but the child was born after January 1, 2020 and does not have any other citizenship, the child can be registered as a Latvian citizen.

 

In order to register a child as a Latvian citizen, a parent must send all documents to the Latvian Citizenship and Migration Office. All documents required for registration are available on the website of the Office for Citizenship and Migration at:

 If the child's birth certificate is issued in English, German, French or Russian and is sent by mail from abroad, the document does not need to be translated into Latvian.

The decision to grant citizenship is made by the Office for Citizenship and Migration in Latvia and sends a notification to the parents to the specified address abroad.
