EU Foreign Affairs Council to discuss EU support for Ukraine, situation in the Middle East, the South Caucasus, and Sudan

On 21 April 2026, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Artjoms Uršuļskis, will attend the meeting of the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council which will take place in Luxembourg.

Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The discussion among ministers will focus on all forms of continued support for Ukraine, as well as pressure on Russia. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, is scheduled to participate in the meeting via videoconference. Latvia will raise the issue of Russia’s attack on the UNESCO World Heritage site in Lviv. The issue has gained relevance in the context of the 2026 Venice Biennale, where the aggressor country is currently scheduled to be represented.

The situation in the Middle East. EU foreign ministers will discuss the current crisis involving Iran, its regional and global implications, as well as the situation in Lebanon, Syria, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The situation in the South Caucasus region. Foreign ministers will discuss the EU’s engagement and support for the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. They will also consider how to promote a positive image of the EU among the Georgian public while continuing to exert pressure on the Georgian government.

Ministers are also scheduled to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

Prior to the meeting, the foreign ministers of the Baltic and Nordic countries will meet with the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos.

The Foreign Affairs Council deals with matters relating to external action, including the common foreign and security policy, the European security and defence policy, external trade, and development cooperation. The Council’s main task is to ensure the unity, consistency, and effectiveness of the EU’s external action.
