The Hague is known as the international city of peace and justice. Its tradition to host a variety of international institutions dates back approximately 750 years. At the centre of the city stands the Peace Palace providing residence for the Permanent Court of Arbitration since 1913, whereas, since 1946 the Peace Palace hosts the International Court of Justice.
Active engagement in multilateral contacts and representation of the interests of the Republic of Latvia in the international institutions located in The Hague is an integral part of the work carried out by the Embassy of Latvia in the Netherlands. During the period from May 2015 to May 2017, Latvia is a Member of the OPCW Executive Council. Until May 2016, Ambassador of Latvia in The Hague was Deputy Chairperson for the OPCW Executive Council. Since September, 2019 the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Latvia to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is H.E. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Mrs. Aiga Liepiņa.
