On 10 July 2020, the Under Secretary of State, Political Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Jānis Mažeiks, spoke with the non-resident Ambassador of India, Monika Kapil Mohta, who is completing her term in office in Latvia, and thanked her for successful cooperation in the strengthening of bilateral relations.
The officials, who were in contact by phone, discussed their appreciation of the visit to Latvia by the Vice President of India, Venkaiah Naidu, in 2019 and the working visit to India by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, in January 2020. They expressed their conviction that the political dialogue between the two countries and cooperation in international organisations will also evolve successfully in future.
Hope was expressed that an Indian Embassy could be opened in Latvia in the coming years: the Ambassador of India is currently residing in Stockholm, Sweden.
The two countries have established excellent cooperation in education and in the field of ICT, information and communications technology. Jānis Mažeiks drew attention to Latvia’s highly developed ICT services sector where cooperation with India has become especially active over recent years. The Political Director also said he hoped that the many guest students from India will be able to return to in-person studies at Latvian universities as soon as possible.
