An agreement between Latvia and Sri Lanka signed in New Delhi
On 11 November 2025, an Agreement between the Republic of Latvia and the Democratic Socialistic Republic of Sri Lanka on the transfer of sentenced persons was officially signed in New Delhi, India. Under the agreement, the convicted nationals of the two countries can serve their sentence in their country of nationality.
For the Republic of Latvia, the agreement was signed by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to Sri Lanka, Juris Bone, and for the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, by the High Commissioner to the Republic of India, H.E. Mahishini Colonne.
The signature and subsequent ratification of the agreement will contribute to the effectiveness of the provision of consular assistance and complement the legal framework between the two countries.
Relations between Latvia and Sri Lanka are evolving in both the educational and economic dimensions. Latvia is increasingly being chosen by Sri Lankan students as a study destination, while in the economic sector, the two countries have the potential for expanding their cooperation in the areas of information technology and tourism.
Latvia’s non-resident Embassy in Sri Lanka is located in New Delhi, India. The first non-resident Ambassador of Latvia, Artis Bērtulis, was accredited to Sri Lanka on 6 May 2019, while the current Latvian Ambassador, Juris Bone, took up his post on 5 November 2023.
