COMMON VALUES, SHARED INTERESTS
In 2016, as we celebrate the 95th anniversary of the establishment and the 25th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations, we take stock of the positive and friendly relations existing between Latvia and Canada, and the variety of reasons to look forward to the future together.
In their actions and their policies, Latvia and Canada are likeminded states with common values: democracy, freedom, human rights and rule of law. These values are at the heart of our bilateral relationship which is steadily broadening and intensifying year-by-year.
Latvia and Canada support the rule-based international order and they both are engaged in enthusiastic efforts to promote peace and security, economic and social development across the globe and implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
Both countries respect their international commitments and uphold the respect for international law as the fundament of global security. Latvia and Canada work together at NATO, the United Nations, OSCE, and, with Latvia’s accession to the OECD on 1 July 2016, cooperation will also increase in the context of this organisation. To be confirmed as the 35th member of the OECD is an opportunity for Latvia to take economic development to a higher level.
Latvia sincerely appreciates Canada’s decision to become the framework nation at the core of the multinational NATO battalion in Latvia. Canadian soldiers will be welcomed with open arms and Canada’s presence in Latvia will enhance transatlantic bonds between Europe and North America.
