1776

Consulate established in Riga to support the Swedish trade.

1784

Consulate established in Liepaja to support the Swedish trade

1858

Re-organisation of the diplomatic representations of the Swedish-Norwegian Union. Riga becomes a special consulary district including the provinces Livland and Kurland. Vice consulates established in Ventspils and Liepaja.

1902

The consulary disctrict of Riga is expanded with the provinces Witebsk and Kaunas

1905

The Swedish-Norwegian union is dissolved. The consulary district of Riga is dissolved and becomes a vice consulate to the general consulate in St. Petersburg.

1913

Riga once again becomes a consulary district of it's own, containing the provinces Livland, Kurland, Witebsk, Kaunas and Vilnius.

1918

Latvia declares itself independant on the 18th of November.

1919

I april inrättas lettlands provisoriska regeringsrepresentation i Stockholm.

1921

On the 4th of February Latvia is acknowledged de-jure by Sweden.

Swedish embassies are established in the Baltic capitals, with a joint chief in Riga (of the rank envoyé)

On the 13th of May Latvia's first envoyé is accredited in Sweden

1925

A Swedish-Latvian organisations is founded in Stockholm.

1929

The president of Latvia, Gustavs Zemgals, makes an official state visit to Sweden. Swedish king Gustav V visits Riga.

1931

The committee for cultural cooperation with the Baltic countries is founded in Stockholm.

1937

The Baltic Foundation is founded in Stockholm.

1940

According to a decision made by the high council of the Soviet Union on the 6th of August, all Latvian embassies and consulates should cease their activities. The Latvian envoyé considered the Soviet government in Latvia illegal and refused to turn over the embassy to the Soviet Union.

On the 19th of August the embassy is turned over to the Soviet Union through mediation by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On the 25th of August all swedish diplomatic presence in the Baltic countries is terminated.

1946

On the 25th of January all baltic soldiers (the majority of them were Latvian citizens) are extradicted to the Soviet Union.

1990

A Swedish consulate is opened in Riga.

1991

On the 27th of August the Swedish government acknowledges Latvia's independence. The next day the foreign ministers of Sweden and Latvia sign a contract on mutual diplomatic recognition.

On the 29th of August the Swedish embassy in Riga opens.

1992

The king of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf, visits Latvia on the 10th of September.

1995

The then president of Latvia, Guntis Ulmanis, makes an official state visit to Sweden on October 16 - October 18.
