The Latvian history-based fiction film "The Sign Painter" (“Pilsēta pie upes”) tells the story of an ordinary Latvian.

Ansis, a young and naive sign painter in 1940's Latvia, has a very simple dream: to marry Zisla, the beautiful and free-spirited daughter of a local Jewish merchant, and to pursue a career as an artist. His social circumstances get him caught up in a love triangle and his romantic dream shatters as the country is shaken by a tragic course of history.

Filmmaker Viesturs Kairišs deftly chronicles Latvia’s turbulent history during the Second World War through an intelligent mixture of humour and tragedy.
